NHS Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) celebrated the achievements and dedication of staff in delivering patient care in general practice last week. The inaugural awards ceremony at West Bromwich Albion football club was attended by 150 GPs, practice staff and staff from other local NHS organisations.
The GP and Nurse of the Year, together with Patient Champion, were nominated by local patients and colleagues.
The GP of the Year award was presented to Dr. James Gwilt of Carters Green Medical Centre in West Bromwich. In their nomination, one of Dr Gwilt’s patients said: “Every time I see Dr Gwilt I know I am receiving the best possible care I could.”
“I have a long term health condition and Dr Gwilt has been very supportive in ensuring I got the best treatment and in supporting me to come to terms with living with it. When I found out about new treatment options, he was prepared to try these - I feel highly involved when decisions are made about my care.”
The Nurse of the Year was presented to Daniele Welborn from Linkway Medical Centre in West Bromwich.
In the nomination a patient said “Daniele is hard-working, extremely caring and puts her all into nursing. She makes me feel extremely comfortable and at ease with her empathy and her knowledge.”
Prof Nick Harding, GP and Chair of the CCG said:
“The General Practice Stars 2017 awards received over 100 nominations for the 15 award categories. These awards recognise the huge amount of dedication, hard work and commitment of staff in general practice and I was delighted to celebrate their success.”
